Going into the nominating process for the annual fashion awards presented by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, there was a lot of debate as to what celebrity or cultural figure would be named this year’s icon. After awards have been handed out to Michelle Obama, Iman and Lady Gaga in recent years, there was a bit of a feeling of who’s left?

Johnny Depp was a surprise, if not inspired, choice. Among the special awards announced by the fashion council on Wednesday evening, Mr. Depp was the first male recipient of the fashion icon award, given “for his personal and eclectic sense of style,” which presumably is a euphemism for man mascara and shlumpy chic. In that regard, he is certainly one of the most deserving recipients of the award in years.

Other special awards, to be presented at Lincoln Center on June 4, will be given to Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons for international design, Andrew Rosen for the founders award and Tommy Hilfiger for international design. Scott Schuman and Garance Doré, the street-style photographers who are a couple off the clock, will be given the media award.

Nominees for the best women’s, men’s and accessories designers in two divisions were also announced. For the best women’s designer of the year, the nominees are Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs. For men’s wear, the nominees are Billy Reid, Patrik Ervell and Simon Spurr. For accessories, they are Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Reed Krakoff.

In the second division, the Swarovski-sponsored awards given to newcomers (though, really, it’s getting hard to differentiate), the nominees for women’s designer are Chris Peters and Shane Gabier of Creatures of the Wind, Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty of Suno and Joseph Altuzarra. For men’s wear, the nominees are Antonio Azzuolo, Phillip Lim and Todd Snyder. And for accessories, they are Irene Neuwirth, Pamela Love and Tabitha Simmons.
